Learn to do attachments in research papers correctly (2023)

An addendum to a research paper can take many different forms and appear complex. Knowing how to properly integrate attachments into your research is important. Read on to find out how.

What are attachments?

Appendices constitute a section of a research paper consisting of materials and references that are too long or too large to fit in the main report. The information in the appendix should be summarized and then referenced in the body of the research paper. Appendices are not included in the word count of the article.

What do I need to include in an attachment?

An appendix contains information that does not necessarily have to be included in the main part of the document, but can be helpful for a deeper understanding of the subject of study. It also contains information that is too long to fit in the body of the document.

What can you put in an attachment?

You can add the following elements to a stub:

  • Calculations, statistics, raw data
  • technical drawings or technical details, e.g. computer coding
  • energy supplier
  • paragraphs or text
  • tables or graphs
  • Pictures, drawings and illustrations
  • Maps, charts and drawings
  • Website Addresses
  • reading recommendations
  • additional details about a new or unique approach or design process
  • Correspondence
  • Demographic information about participants or groups
  • Sample answers from participants
  • extended or detailed descriptions
  • Lists too long to fit in main text
  • Research listings and supporting articles not directly referenced in the text

Please note that the appendix should only contain information that will be linked as references in the body of your work. The appendix should not contain information that is not relevant or does not support the ideas expressed in the main article.

Why are attachments important?

An appendix allows people to skip information they don't want to read. An appendix contains additional information that may not be valuable to all audiences, or you may not be able to include it in the body due to time or space constraints. Appendices support the main points of your work, but not everyone will be interested in reading them.

Appendix General rules for scientific work

If you include an appendix (singular) or appendices (plural), remember that the information is not essential; Therefore, even without them, the reader can understand the importance, validity, and implications of your research.

All attached documents must have a label followed by a letter or number. The same labels must be published on the research paper content page, and each appendix must be referenced by its number or letter in the appropriate place in the research paper text.

Attachments also require a meaningful title, which can be centered or left-aligned (depending on the desired citation style). The tag tells the reader what the attachment is, for example "Scanned copy of participant 1's questionnaire responsesÖ'Line chart showing precipitation in June 2021 in Shanghai.

How do I create attachments in a research paper?

Here's a step-by-step guide to creating attachments!

  1. Bring together:
    • Collect raw data, such as calculations
    • Add images, tables, charts
    • Note the instruments used, e.g. cameras, cell phone recordings
    • Add any other additional but relevant information, e.g. E-mails, transcripts
  2. Organize:
    • Organize the appendices in the same order they are mentioned in the research paper or dissertation. This makes it easier for the reader to navigate the appendix. For example, if you first mention an Excel spreadsheet in your research paper, these are your first attachments.
    • Add captions to each attachment in turn. Use capital letters or sentence capitals at the top of the page and the same font and size as the main headings used in the body of the research paper for each chapter, e.g., Times New Roman).
    • If you only want to add one item to the attachment, just name it "Attachment", no letters or numbers are needed.
  3. Format:
    • On the next line, give the attachment a meaningful title (left-aligned or centered, depending on the style required by your university), e.g. B. “Bar chart showing the association between type 2 diabetes and sugar consumption in Dubai”.
    • Place all appendices immediately before or after the bibliography/list of works cited/bibliography (depending on your institution's style specification)
    • In order not to confuse the reader, each appendix should start on a different page (regardless of how many pages it contains).
    • Add page numbers (usually in the top-right corner of the page).
  4. Correct:
    • Check if the order is correct.
    • Make sure headings and descriptive tags are present and are the same size and font as the main headings in the rest of the research paper.
    • Correct spelling, punctuation or grammar mistakes.
  5. Content Page - Add your attachment labels and titles to the table of contents with their corresponding page number

How to reference your attachments

If you have an appendix in a research paper, you must reference it in the research paper. After the sentence in which you refer to your appendix in the document, format the citation in the text as follows: (See Appendix A for an illustration of the increase in sales.) Ö (see Appendix 3 for the full transcript). The letter or number must match the label on the attachment. For example,

Overall, the qualitative results showed a strong preference for reducing teacher turnover and improving accountability (see Appendix 4).

In summary, you should now have a better understanding of how to write an appendix and realize that appendices allow you to include additional content to support your research work. The format may differ depending on the style required by your university, but there are many similarities.
